CATCH A FIRE

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film?

This is the film I've enjoyed the most so far in the course of the class. I has strong images and sequences that really touch the watcher. Also, it seems a little more honest and real than the other two. I disliked watching certain scenes of torture because they were terrible, especially the one with children, but of course I understand the importance of including them, and applaud when moviemakers use their art to show things the way they really happened. In ths sense, it reminded me of the dictatorship in Chile with Pinochet. The chanting of the african people was also inspiring and generated a strong contrast with the whites' clebrations.

2. Who was the character you like the most and the character you liked the least in the film? Why?

My favorite characters were Chamusso and Betsy. They were complex characters and also human and flawed. Chamusso underwent an amazing transformation, and he did it to leave his daughters and the new generations with a free land (or, at least, more free, because still today it's common to see diferent forms of racism and white, mostly male, heterosexual domination.

Nic Vos is one of the most hateable characters ever. Typical cruel, privileged, cold white man in power. And obsessed with the idea that violence and torture was the way to "protect his country". Donald Turmp and Vos would have gotten along vey well.

3. What was the role of Samora Machel, the FRELIMO, and revolutionary Mozambique in the struggle against the South African apartheid? Use examples from the film and the biography of Samora Machel.

Machel was a an important force in the fight against Apartheid. He destined all his resources to support the ANC and, that way, support the revolution. He had also been part of FRELIMO in Mozambique, fighting for its liberation from the Portuguese. He was committed not only to the freedom of his counry, but also to the freedom of the rest of africans. He's against indiscriminated killing, supporting the fight with a meaning. He travelled through different countries and territories in Africa suporting the revolutionary groups, such as Rhodesia and South Africa.
